MK’s journey/ story |
| Hafiz Mahmood Khatib, or MK as he is affectionately known has an inspirational story that is rooted in rich South African Muslim history and strong moral foundations from which he has developed his passion for people and business. MK’s journey originatedin Durban where he grew up along with his two brothers and two sisters in very humble circumstances. The central thread throughout MK’s life story is founded on the teachings he received from his Father and Grandfather, Maulana Abu Bakr Khatib, the long serving Imam of the Grey Street Mosque in Durban during the 1950’s. In these difficult political times Maulana Abu Bakr Khatib’s inspiration rippled throughout the country. He started a legacy of moral and religious teachings based on love, honesty, acceptance and most importantly integrity taught to his family and students who carry on his legacy today. MK is resolute on imparting those same principals not only onto his own children but into his businesses as well.MK thrived growing up and schooling in Durban where his personal leadership qualities were developed. MK’s “Let’s do it” philosophy was evident in his involvement in different aspects of his schooling such as speech and drama as well as being elected house, soccer and athletics captain. A defining moment for MK was in high school when he chose Arabic as his extra subject. He recalls how his peers questioned whether he would ever use Arabic in his life, now looking back he says Arabic is the subject he uses the most with his Middle Eastern business partners.Another defining moment was when MK moved to Cape Town after matric with dreams of possibly becoming an engineer, and committed to spend one year memorising the entire Quraan by heart. During this sacred time MK’s perspective changed and he decided to take up law instead. He returned to his home-town of Durban after a challenging year in Cape Town and began his BA law studies and continued with his passion by studying, BA Islamic studies and Arabic as well. MK was awarded the Faculty Bronze Medal once completing University for the most achieved student which brought great pride to MK and his family. Seconded by the Muslim Judicial Council; MK was majorly involved in the drafting of legislation of project 59 dealing with Muslim Personal Law. His knowledge in both Law and Islamic Studies placed MK in a ground-breaking situation where academic and religious studies were combined to improve the rights of South African Muslims. MK returned to Cape Town to complete his LLB at UCT and his articles at the largest law firm in South Africa at the time. In 2000 MK Attorneys and Conveyances was proudly established in Ryland’s Estates in the Cape Flats.MK’s father always wanted his children to be successful but what he desired more was for his five children to have strong Integrity and to always give back to the community. It was this lesson that helped MK put on his development hat when he was asked to spearhead the phenomenal and ground-breaking Vangate Mall Project. Not knowing anything about the Property Development Industry, MK undertook an internship with a national project development manager to familiarise himself with the business. The multi-cultural, economic and social success of this project impacted both MK’s life and Cape Flat community members immensely. (Community project link to page). MK is also the president of the Gatesville Mosque, where many culturally and socially uplifting projects are common. (Link to community projects)With MKs’ Attorney firm and Development Business thriving, MK’s “Just Do Its’” philosophy along with his passion for business saw him opening a luxury car dealership at Northgate Island which as fate would have it coincided with the IPL being brought, with 3 weeks’ notice to South Africa in 2009. MK saw an opportunity, resulting in MKs’ Exotic Car Hire (Link to website) supplying cars with professional drivers to Bollywood stars, Sports stars and celebrities throughout the successful IPL Tournament. MK’s business flair then secured transport contracts for the Confederations Cup in 2009 as well as the 2010 Soccer World Cup. MK continued to grow and expand; supplying luxury vehicles for The Westin and the Table Bay Hotels, later adding The Mount Nelson, 15 On Orange, Crystal Towers ,Pepper Club and Arabella Kleinmond to his impressive portfolio.MK, always searching for the next prospect, entered the Tourism Industry by supplying and staffing tour/ business centres and concierge services in most of the above mentioned hotels. He noticed that the competition and standard of service in the Tourism Industry was low and he knew he could do better, resulting in the establishment of MK Exotic Tours (MK Tours link). Joining the MK Portfolio of companies and forming the foundation for the concept of the MK Exotic Cars and Lifestyle Centre(Lifestyle link) were the MK Exotic Villas (Villa website link), MK Yacht (website link) and MK Arabian Horses (website link) services were established. All interactions and decisions made must be aligned with God’s Will and be based on Integrity. Any philosophy that is not the same as MK’s; will not be included in his portfolio of companies.
